Description

Galata Köprüsü

Hundreds of nylon threads stretched between sky and water sway rhythmically bathed in an unreal, warm and enveloping light. Steering them masterfully are fishermen who, every day punctually, enliven the Galata Bridge. They stand huddled on the parapets sipping hot tea, heedless of the incessant wind and the shuddering of the structure shaken by city traffic. They wait confidently for the right bite that will result in the exceptional catch. They have an absorbed and patient gaze, the result of countless identical days spent in that same place, intent on their ancient art, some for pastime, some for work, some for survival. Captured in a series of vibrant portraits this varied and multifaceted humanity in terms of age, ethnicity, religion, tells of the unique atmosphere of this place, suspended between ancient and modern, which has always been a crossroads of peoples and cultures.
